Shop smart! The Truth about the 4Cs

Throughout our lives we will come across hundreds, if not, thousands of different jewelry pieces. All these pieces will be either costume or fine jewelry, made of different kinds of alloys. On top of that, some pieces will have one or many precious or semi-precious stones set in them, from topaz to sapphires, all the way to the king of precious stones, the diamond.

I prefer the Greek origin of the word “adamas”, which translates to “unbreakable”. Diamonds are known for their beauty and hardness. The hardest natural stone known to man. This makes them especially useful in jewelry because their beauty will never fade. They will keep their facets (the symmetrical outer “cuts” of the diamond) unscratched and sparkly until they move to the next person who gets the privilege of using them.

A diamond reflects purity, especially diamonds with very few inclusions (imperfections or mineral deposits inside the stone). Diamonds remind us of the perfection that is nature and how memories can be passed on throughout generations. I have met customers wearing diamond pendants from a single diamond that belonged to their family a couple of generations back.

Every diamond keeps a story, from the moment it is bought to the moment it is passed on to the next person in line. If diamonds could talk, they would talk about the formation of our planet, dinosaurs and everything that happened about 3 billion years ago. It is no wonder people find them precious.

Diamonds might not be as scarce as most people think. The thing is that it costs a lot of money to mine them and it is getting harder and harder to reach them, hence the price for the rough stone. The market price of diamonds has been steadily increasing for the last couple of decades, and even with the advent of other big mining companies besides De Beers, such as ALROSA and Rio-Tinto diamonds, diamonds are still increasing their value.

The rarer the diamond the more its value will grow over time. This is true for Fancy colored diamonds that are among the rarest to find. Diamonds with deep or vivid colors like the coveted yellow, blue, pink, or even red diamonds, can fetch prices much higher than a good quality regular diamond. Red diamonds are known to be the most expensive ones because they are an exceedingly rare find.

There are four main aspects of a diamond you need to take into consideration when buying. That is cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Make sure to read the next articles in the series to shop like the pros.
